#3 – La Sagrada Familia – A great place to see in Barcelona if you like architecture

Why it's so awesome: Antoni Gaudí He was the most famous architect in the history of Barcelona and many of the most beautiful buildings in the city were his magical creations.

This incredible cathedral is an impressive representation of his style: it is dreamy, fanciful and built on a scale that astonishes the eyes and mind.

In fact, the structure is still not finished, and 140 years have passed since its construction began. When completed, it will be the tallest cathedral in the world.

It was once used as a party space and something of that opulent past remains even though it now houses plants from all over the world. It is worth taking a little detour when visiting Barcelona.

It contains plant species from almost two dozen countries, all of them protected by the arches of the metallic architecture. This place is only open on weekdays, so be sure to plan your visit. #6 – La Cova Fumada – A must for foodies!

Why it's so awesome: The tradition of tapas, small snacks that accompany drinks, is very popular in Barcelona and is also a fairly cheap way to try different flavors and dishes. La Cova Fumada is one of the best places in the city for it. The exterior and interior of the building are nondescript, but the tapas are absolutely top quality.

What to do there: This place is famous for the quality of its tapas. Its grilled sardines, spicy potatoes, minced meat bomb and seafood offerings are especially popular. So, go in for a drink one afternoon and go for the deals. You will most likely stay there all afternoon working on the menu

#7 – Gran Teatre del Liceu

Why it's so awesome: This building has resisted over the years despite disasters and economic crises. It was inaugurated in 1847, but was remodeled in 1994 after a fire. For Barcelonans, this has long been the place where their culture and spirit, expressed through theater and dance, have thrived, and that sentiment continues to this day.

What to do there: You can obviously see opera at this venue, but if you're not into that particular art form, keep an eye out for other performances. This building also hosts dance and music shows. Tickets are usually much cheaper than you think, so make sure you buy them fast before they sell out

#8 – An authentic flamenco show – A great afternoon/evening of entertainment!

#9 – Bunkers del Carmel

Why it's so awesome: This place is an anti-aircraft battery that was built in 1937, when the city was bombed hundreds of times a day during the Spanish Civil War. It's a part of history that most people born outside the area probably don't know about, and it's one of the lesser-known tourist attractions to visit.

The Spanish Civil War ran from 1936 to 1939 and is often overshadowed by the events of World War II. But this piece of history reflects the spirit of the city and its determined resistance to the forces of Francisco Franco during the war.

What to do there: It is quite a climb to this place, but it is worth the trip. After the war, this area was occupied by houses that were later abandoned. The place would have fallen into oblivion, but the neighbors petitioned to preserve the place as a historical monument. Once you have visited the place, take some time to enjoy the views, which stretch all over Barcelona and all the way to the sea.

#10 – Bostik Murals

Why it's so awesome: This site is a museum of urban art. Normally, that would be difficult, since you can really rip murals off the street walls. To overcome this problem, the owners of this venue have encouraged more than 20 artists to create original pieces on the exterior of the building. You'll see some of the best muralists in the city here and gain a new appreciation for Barcelona's creative spirit.

What to do there: The muralists who have participated in this project are absolutely amazing and include BToy, Sixe Paredes, Manu Manu, Sheone, Fasim, Sebastien Waknine and Sam3. The art here changes all the time, so be sure to check the website to see what's on while you're in town. If you are an artist, the place also offers its walls to external artists who want to try doing murals.

#11 – Montjuic Magic Fountain Show – Awesome place to visit in Barcelona with children!

Why it's so awesome: This site is a bit kid-friendly, but any adult who likes music, light, and water will enjoy it too. The fountain was designed by Carles Buigas for the 1929 Exposition and is the only remaining attraction from that spectacle. There are over 7 billion choreographic combinations in the shows, with water and light dancing to music from bygone eras as well as more popular soundtracks.

What to do there: Make sure you get there early so you can get a good spot. The show is usually very popular with tourists, so if you arrive late you will probably find yourself in the back where you won't be able to see much.

#12 – Las Ramblas

Why it's so awesome: It is the tourist heart of the city, which is why many Barcelonans avoid it. But it is also something that you should experience only once to fully understand Barcelona. This promenade stretches for miles and contains entertainers and food stalls before ending at the seafront. It's a surprisingly engaging walk, and once you reach the end you'll be within walking distance of some of Barcelona's best attractions, including the Gothic Quarter.

What to do there: Okay, Las Ramblas is one of those wild places that you will either love or hate. It's a place you'll have to visit once just to say you've been, but don't waste too much of your precious time here. Instead, use it as an avenue to explore the Gothic Quarter, Placa de Catalunya, and the Columbus Monument.

#13 – Can Calopa – A beautiful outdoor place to visit in Barcelona

Why it's so awesome: If you want to enjoy Barcelona wine and olive oil in a natural setting, you don't have to do it outside the city. Can Calopa is a winery in the heart of the city. It is a 16th century farmhouse surrounded by 3 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the city. It is run by a corporation that uses the site to provide a home and work for young people with psychiatric disabilities.

What to do there: Some 8,000 bottles of red wine are produced in this place a year and you can be one of the first to try the new bottles. The place offers wine and olive oil tastings and, for a small price, you can visit the oil mill and the cellar. You can also choose an option that includes a late breakfast with wine pairing. So however you enjoy your wine, you'll find an option here that you'll love.

#14 – Casa Batlló

Why it's so awesome: Gaudí's creations are all over the city and some of them are beautiful enough to be on postcards. In fact, many of them are on postcards, and Casa Batlló will help you understand exactly why. This is an apartment block that Gaudí remodeled in the early 20th century, and the roof tiles are modeled to look like Epic dragon scales, right?

What to do there: The attention to detail and feel of Casa Batlló is amazing, so take your time to look at all the details. Both inside and out, the building has a sinuous, dragon-like feel, with few straight lines and an overall impression of something alive that perhaps is just sleeping. You can take a guided tour of the place if you want more context or just enjoy Casa Batlló on your own.

#15 – Mercat de la Boqueria – A fascinating place to visit in Barcelona

Why it's so awesome: The current site of this market has been in operation for over 200 years, but there has been a Boquería market in the city for much longer. It is a tradition that has endured through all the changes of the modern world, and one that is worth experiencing. In this market you can buy the freshest food and participate in a ritual that has been part of Barcelona for a long time.

What to do there: If you like to cook or just want an easy snack, you'll find plenty of fresh produce at Mercat de la Boqueria. Even if you're not interested in buying food that you have to cook, there's plenty to do on this site. It's a place where you can see the locals in their natural environment, so it's amazing for people watching. When you get tired of that, you can always have a beer and some tapas in one of the bars in the market. A great way to experience this market is with a local guide who will help you choose the ingredients to make an authentic paella.

#16 – History Museum of the City of Barcelona

Why it's so awesome: Barcelona has a long history, dating back to the Romans and the great Emperor Augustus, and part of this history has been preserved in this museum. There are also several Roman sites throughout the city, especially in the Gothic Quarter, but this museum is the best way to get a closer look at these ancient roots.

What to do there: This site is underground and will allow you to explore the remains of a factory, shops and parts of the old wall. It's a big site, spanning 4,000 meters, so make sure you set aside a couple of hours to see it all. Continue up through the museum as it will take you through time to the vaults of the Palau Reial Major, which was the seat of the former Dukes of Barcelona.

#17 – Joan Miro Foundation

Why it's so awesome: Barcelona is a city of artists and creators, and has been for a long time thanks to visionaries like Joan Miró. This museum was created by the artist to encourage the growth of contemporary art in the city, and he worked very closely with the architect during construction. #20 – Camp Nou – A great place to experience the local culture

Why it's so awesome: The Camp Nou has a capacity of 99,000 people and has been the home of FC Barcelona since 1957. It was built by Lluis Domenech, a contemporary of Gaudí, and it is the perfect place to enjoy good music while you are in the city.

What to do there: Many different musical concerts are held in this venue, so find out what's up while you're in town and grab a ticket. This is a beautiful venue full of old world charm so be sure to dress up and walk in like you've stepped into a period piece

#22 – Playa de la Nova Icaria – A great place to visit in Barcelona as a couple!

Why it's so awesome: Barcelona has many great beaches and it can be hard to choose between them, but Nova Icaria is definitely one of the best beaches in Barcelona. The endless expanse of white sand is one of the quietest beaches in the city and is perfect for families and couples looking for a relaxing time.

What to do there: This is a great beach for relaxing, but there is also plenty to do if you are more active. It has a play area and volleyball courts for the kids or whoever wants to work up a sweat and easy access to restaurants and bars when you get tired of the sun and want to eat.

#23 – Barceloneta Beach

Why it's so awesome: This beach is in a popular neighborhood and is one of the busiest in the city. But there are good reasons for this, as it has plenty of entertainment options, as well as some of the best seafood restaurants in the city. Whether you like to sunbathe or practice water sports or just want to look at the sea and eat seafood, on this beach you will find everything you need and more.

What to do there: This beach has a wide range of coastal huts where you can eat delicious dishes while contemplating the sand. Water sports are also popular in this area, with windsurfing and kitesurfing being the most popular options. Basically, no matter what you like to do on the beach, at Playa de la Barceloneta you will find the equipment and space to do it.

#24 – Santa Maria del Mar

Why it's so awesome: This building was finished in 1383 and took 54 years to complete. All the stones used were brought from the mountains surrounding the city by ordinary citizens, which may explain why it took so long to build! This is an incredibly elegant building that has survived through the ages to amaze tourists today.

What to do there: There is a lot to see in this building, so make sure you set aside some time. Most of the original structure is intact, although there is some fire damage from the Spanish Civil War, so you're literally seeing a piece of history when you spend time here.

Be sure to pay attention to the stained glass windows, which are perfectly placed to take advantage of the angles of natural light entering the building.

#25 – Picasso Museum

Why it's so awesome: You might not expect to see a museum dedicated to Picasso's work in Barcelona, after all, he was from Malaga. But Picasso was apprenticed in Barcelona and made some of his first works in the city. The Picasso museum displays many examples of this work up to his Blue Period, so you can better appreciate and understand his early genius.

What to do there: Picasso's work is obviously the biggest draw in this museum, but the buildings themselves also deserve some attention. The five adjoining buildings of the Picasso Museum were built in the 13th and 14th centuries and are fantastic examples of that period in history. So be sure to spend some time exploring these blasts from the past as well.

#26 – Apple of Discord

Why it's so awesome: Barcelona has been home to many famous artists and architects, and of course, they didn't always get along. If you want to see this conflict up close, you can visit the Apple of Discord.

Located in the Eixample district, the buildings on this block were created by the greatest modernist architects in Barcelona at the time. Each of the architects tried to show his supremacy over the others, and the end result is an impressive and slightly confusing combination of styles.

What to do there: To get to the Apple of Discord you must go on foot. Go up Passeig de la Gracia and see the sights along the way before you get to this block, and then just explore. The buildings on this block are all innovative and very different and represent important advances in modernist techniques. Unfortunately, their genius was overshadowed by Gaudí's Casa Batlló, but that doesn't mean they are any less interesting or significant.

Formerly a meeting place for locals during jousting competitions or celebrations, today it is a popular place for afternoon and evening drinks and meals. It has the same wide range of eating and drinking places as Las Ramblas, but for locals, not tourists.

So if you want a much more authentic experience while you're in the city, spend one of your afternoons in this laid-back spot.

What to do there: This area is the perfect place to go bar hopping with the locals. Some of the city's best bars and restaurants are found on this tree-lined promenade and it's the perfect place to bring a few friends and enjoy the flavors of Barcelona. So do what the Barcelonans do. Start with a cocktail at Cal Brut and then try some tapas at Disset 17 Gaus. Afterwards, you just have to see where the night takes you! #28 – Ocata Beach – A nice non-touristy place to visit in Barcelona

Why it's so awesome: This beach is half an hour from the city by train and is pristine and beautiful with white and golden sand. In addition, it is huge, so you can take your own place in the sand and enjoy the peace without interruptions. You will not find many tourists in this place, since it does not have the entertainment options of other beaches. Instead, it is a place to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy some good seafood.

What to do there: On this beach you will not have to complete the space for towels. Instead, you will be spoiled for choice. Enjoy the sun, sand and ocean alone or with a few good friends. And when you're sick of the sun, visit one of the nearby restaurants, chringuitos, for fresh seafood and cold drinks.

#29 – Barcelona Cathedral (Cathederal de la Seu)

What to do there: Get your cameras ready and be sure to take photos in front of the cathedral and then count the geese. There are always 13 geese in the cathedral, which symbolize each year of Eulalia's life before her martyrdom. Also, pay the rooftop tour when you're there. The cathedral looks especially impressive from up high and you'll also get a great view of the Gothic Quarter from above.

#30 – Carrer de les Aigues – One of the most incredible free places in Barcelona

Why it's so awesome: Many people will tell you that the best views of the city are found in Park Güell. But locals know that the park's views can't compare to what you'll enjoy on this ancient road. It meanders around the mountains and overlooks the Mediterranean, offering views of both land and sea. And as an added bonus, the old road has been modified to make it perfect for biking or walking, so be sure to pack some decent walking shoes on your trip to Barca.

What to do there: It is a long way, about 20 km, but it is quite flat and easy to walk or cycle. You can reach it via a short funicular ride, and you'll get stunning views where there are hardly any tourists. It's a secret only the locals know, so take advantage of it before the crowds arrive

#31 – Tibidabo

Why it's so awesome: Tibidabo is a 1,700 foot mountain that offers a lot to those who dare to reach the top. You can go up by tram because you surely do not have time to go all the way up and enjoy some great views, as well as a series of entertainment options.

What to do there: There are many ways to enjoy this mountain. You can go hiking through the park, tour the Basilica del Sagrat Cor or spend some time in the theme park. This last option is decidedly retro, but loved by kids of all ages, and has a Ferris wheel and carousel, as well as other old-style rides and games.

#32 – Ciutadella Park – A beautiful outdoor place to visit in Barcelona

Why it's awesome: When you're in the middle of a busy city, sometimes a park can be a refuge. This is even more important when you are in Barcelona, which is a city for walking. So if your legs are getting tired, be sure to rest them in the cool, leafy surroundings of Parc de la Ciutadella. After a bit of rest and recharging, you'll be ready to hit the rush again!

What to do there: This is a park to relax on a bench and enjoy the sensations and views that occur when you have nature around you. You can also take a relaxing rowing boat ride on the lake and be sure to see the neoclassical fountain in the center, created by one of the most popular architects in the history of Barcelona.

Why it's so awesome: Tapas isn't strictly Catalan food, but it's still an awesome way to eat because you can try a number of tiny dishes and find the flavors you really like. The best way to do this is by escaping the tourist routes and finding bars like Casa Pages, where the locals go to eat.

What to do there: Eating tapas is about trying lots of small options and seeing what you like best. So be sure to try the meatballs and patatas bravas and have a drink while you're there. Locally bottled vermouth is usually the drink of choice for the locals, so who are you to go against tradition?

#34 – The Horta Labyrinth Park – A very peculiar place in Barcelona!

Why it's so awesome: This garden is largely neglected by tourists, but it has been delighting locals for hundreds of years, making it the oldest garden in the city. Created in 1791 as part of the vast estate of the wealthy Desvalls family, the terraces were inspired by Italian designs. This garden has several parts, created at different times in history, but the central labyrinth is the main attraction.

What to do there: There are over 2,000 twists and turns in this maze, so if you don't have a good sense of direction you could very happily get lost there. In the center is a statue of Eros, the Greek god of love, and you can also sit in one of the pavilions facing the maze and watch the action.

Each pavilion has its own statues of Greek gods, so if you've ever wanted to get your photo taken with an icon from the past, this is the place to get it!

#35 – Stroll through the impressive Gothic Quarter

Why it's so awesome: The Barri Gòtic, or Gothic Quarter, as you might imagine, is packed with incredible architecture that dates back to the Gothic period and beyond. In fact, this area is one of the oldest in the city and even has the remains of a Roman fort hidden among the narrow alleys and winding streets. It is a joy to get lost in this labyrinthine part of the city and you will soon find yourself in the heart of a beautiful square lined with cafes before plunging back into the maze

#36 – Montjuïc Cemetery

Why it's so awesome: This cemetery was inaugurated in 1883 and is the largest in Barcelona. It might sound a bit strange to wander through a cemetery, but the beautiful Art Nouveau tombs and peaceful setting overlooking the sea make it one of the best experiences in the city.

What to do there: For a more somber view of the city's history, be sure to visit the Fossar de la Pedrera, also known as the Tomb of the Quarry. It is located in the west wing of the cemetery and contains 4,000 victims of the Franco regime after Barcelona fell to fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War. There are also memorials to the victims of the Holocaust, making this part of the cemetery a moving and sad place to visit.
